ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

HOW I MAKE MY HANGINGS:   

My hangings are made from commercial fabrics. There is a top layer, a thin layer of batting in the middle (to provide some substance) and a backing layer. Many of my art works have some area of woven strips of fabric in them, combining my love of weaving and sewing. Most of my works also include appliquéd fabric motifs. Everything is "raw-edged," meaning that I do not finish the edges of either the woven fabrics or the motifs. I do machine-stitch down the motifs so they are not likely to fray; the woven pieces will fray, which is part of the "look" of my work. If they fray too much, feel free to snip off the threads with sharp scissors.

After I weave the strips of fabric, and before the appliqué, I hand-stitch the woven areas with large straight stitches in various colors of thread. This adds some color and texture to the piece. After everything is stitched down, I put on the backer to create an attractive finish to the back, and sew on a sleeve across the top of the piece.

Some of my pieces I mount on wooden frameworks and add hanging hardware to the back.

HOW TO HANG MY PIECES:

I  make a thin wooden hanging bar, slightly shorter than the piece, and drill a hole in each end. This bar, which is coated with polyurethane to protect the fabric, is slipped through the sleeve, and two small nails hold it to the wall – or, if you prefer, you may hang it with monofilament nylon line through the holes.  Each piece is shipped complete with its bar and two small nails.

Fabric moves; so the piece may not be quite as solidly squared-up as a framed piece would be. But that's part of the charm of fabric. If you frame these pieces, I suggest you don’t use glass, as some of texture and detail are obscured by the glass.

The works that are mounted on wooden frameworks can be hung from a picture hook like any other piece of artwork.

HOW TO CARE FOR FABRIC HANGINGS:

Like most hanging art, my pieces are not intended to be washed. They may be dusted, or shaken out to take off surface dust.  A piece can be spot-cleaned with a variety of products; I'd start with a little water on a clean rag, and dab at the spot. Try it on an inconspicuous area to make sure it doesn't damage the fabric. Most modern fabrics have very good dyes that don't run.

MONSTER DOLLS:

The faces and bodies of the Monster Dolls are mostly from old sweaters, felted with hot water and agitation. They are stuffed with scraps of sweaters. The arms and legs are from commercial fabric and stuffed with batting.  Then I choose from my collection of buttons, yarn, beads, and other little things for eyes, hair and decorations. Please do not give to children under 3, as there is a risk of choking on the small parts.

PURCHASING:

There is a shopping cart where you can put your purchases, then check out with PayPal. If you don’t have a PayPal account, you can use your credit card through Stripe; you will find both options on the check-out page. If your purchase is delivered within New York State, I have to charge you the state 4% sales tax, which is chargeable on both the item and the shipping.

SHIPPING:

I will ship either by UPS or US Postal Service, whichever seems to make more sense as far as cost and location. Of course, if you want a piece sent to a PO Box, it will have to be the US Postal Service. I charge the shipping by weight.

Necklaces are shipped free.

RETURNS:

I understand that it's hard to buy art online without seeing it in advance. Colors on monitors are all different, and sometimes it's hard to picture the piece on your wall. I will cheerfully refund your money within 21 days — and even pay for return shipping! Please let me know within 7 days that you don't want to keep it. Of course, it has to be in the same condition as when I sent it to you. If a piece is damaged in shipping, please let me know immediately.

PRIVACY:

Privacy is a tough thing to get these days, but I'm all for it. I'm not going to share your name or address or anything else with anybody. I am using Squarespace for the website. MailChimp for my studio newsletter, PayPal and Stripe for payments, and Facebook for sharing;  so check out their privacy policies if you want.
