ABOUT MY WATER SERIES
The pieces in my Water Series are invitations to consider nature – its beauty and untidiness and fragility – and nature's resources, especially water. Water is the most precious substance on earth – far more valuable than the gold and diamonds we humans prize so highly. No resource is unlimited; and there is no substitute for fresh water. We can live for three weeks without food, but only three days without water.
I use cloth and thread to create symbolic, mostly abstract meditations on the state of water on our planet Earth – both the scarcity of clean fresh water, and the over-abundance of ocean water as sea levels rise and threaten to overwhelm low-lying lands.
As I create my works, I consider water's beauty and fragility, and – paradoxically -- its unimaginable power to destroy. I think of how important it is to respect and treasure it while mitigating its destructive force.
Fabric, like water, moves and shifts, changes color with changing light, and displays endless texture, color and pattern. As I weave simple strips of fabric into a work of art, so nature weaves trickles of water into rivers and oceans -- and weaves strands of life into the greatest, most complex work of all. Like water, like nature itself, fabric is beautiful and fragile and untidy at its raw edges.
